Falmouth Lifeboat Rushed to Two Bank Holiday Emergencies – Here’s What Happened
Double Callouts on a Busy Bank Holiday
Falmouth’s inshore lifeboat crew had a busy Bank Holiday Monday, responding to two back-to-back emergency callouts. The incidents occurred within a span of less than two hours, though both turned out to be false alarms.
First Incident: Swimmer in Distress?
The crew’s first alert came at 3:02 pm when pagers went off following a 999 call to HM Coastguard. The call reported a swimmer in difficulty off Greeb Point, Towan Beach, on the Roseland Peninsula. The B Class lifeboat, ‘Robina Nixon Chard,’ was swiftly launched at 3:10 pm and arrived at the scene by 3:25 pm.
Upon arrival, it was quickly determined that the person in question was not a swimmer in distress but a spear fisherman who had his own boat and was safe and well. After ensuring there were no other persons at risk, the Coastguard released the lifeboat from service. The crew returned to the boathouse at 3:41 pm.
Second Incident: Person in Peril at Flushing
Just five minutes after the lifeboat crew returned, they were called out again. This time, a 999 call reported a person at risk in a small tender off Flushing. The crew launched once more and arrived at the scene within five minutes.
By the time the lifeboat reached the area, the individual had already made it to the quay and was safely making their way ashore. The lifeboat crew confirmed that no medical intervention was needed before returning to the boathouse at 4:40 pm.
False Alarms with Good Intent
Both incidents turned out to be false alarms, though they were reported with the best of intentions. The Falmouth lifeboat crew remains ever-ready to respond, even on a busy Bank Holiday like this one.
