On Monday, 8 July 2024, Falmouth Lifeboat’s volunteer crew faced a challenging evening with two successive emergency calls.
The first call came at approximately 7:32 pm when Falmouth Coastguard requested the launch of the B-Class Atlantic 85 lifeboat to assist a group of kayakers reported to be in difficulty near Black Rock. The kayakers were reportedly capsizing in poor weather conditions, including moderate seas and an Easterly force 5/6 wind.
The lifeboat launched at 7:40 pm and arrived at the scene just five minutes later. The crew found a group of six kayakers undergoing training. Upon ensuring all occupants were safe and well, the helmsman escorted the group back to shore. The lifeboat was released by the Coastguard and returned to the station, closing down at 8:20 pm.
Kite Surfer Scare
However, the crew’s evening was far from over. Shortly after returning, their pagers were activated again. This time, they were called to assist a kite surfer reported to be in difficulty near Penarrow Point, Mylor, as spotted by a passing yacht.
The lifeboat was back in the water by 8:30 pm and reached the last reported position of the kite surfer at 8:38 pm. After a quick search, the kite surfer was found near Restronguet Sailing Club, approaching the beach with an onshore wind. The crew confirmed the kite surfer was the individual seen by the yacht and that they were safely ashore.
False Alarms with Good Intent
Despite the adverse weather conditions, both emergency calls turned out to be false alarms, though made with good intent. The lifeboat was finally released from service and returned to the boathouse just before 9:00 pm.
