Falmouth Lifeboat Heroes Save Yacht in Distress Near Porthoustock
Falmouth’s volunteer lifeboat crew sprang into action Tuesday evening, 24th September after a yacht struck a rock and started listing off Porthoustock. The call for help came in at 5.16pm, prompting a swift response from Falmouth Lifeboat Station.
Two lifeboats were launched: the relief inshore lifeboat ‘Julie Poolie’ at 5.25pm, followed by the Severn class lifeboat ‘Richard Cox Scott’ just five minutes later. Both vessels navigated through slight seas, with a southwest force 3/4 wind as they crossed Falmouth Bay to reach the stricken yacht.
Yacht’s Condition Assessed
The lifeboats arrived on the scene at 5.45pm and 5.56pm, respectively. A crew member was transferred to the yacht to assess the situation. Thankfully, the yacht appeared to be intact with no water ingress. However, due to concerns for their safety, one of the two people on board was transferred to the all-weather lifeboat, which then returned to the station by 6.45pm.
Successful Tow to Safety
With one crew member remaining on board the yacht, the inshore lifeboat took the vessel under tow. The yacht was brought safely into Falmouth Yacht Haven, with the casualty secured by 7.56pm. The lifeboat crew returned to the station and closed down by 8.00pm.
