Falmouth Lifeboat Crew Responds to Drifting Kayak
In a swift response on Sunday evening, the Falmouth volunteer lifeboat crew conducted a successful retrieval operation off the coast.
The crew were alerted at 6:38 pm by the National Coastwatch at Nare Point, which had spotted an unoccupied kayak drifting about half a mile offshore. The kayak, still fully equipped with fishing gear and a paddle, prompted immediate action.
Efficient Coordination and Recovery
The Atlantic 85 lifeboat, named ‘Robina Nixon Chard’, was launched at 6:50 pm and managed to reach the drifting vessel by 7:07 pm. Conditions were favourable with smooth seas and a moderate offshore breeze (force 3 wind), aiding the crew in their quick response.
Simultaneously, the Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team was investigating at Porthallow. They learned from a local that the kayak’s owner had safely returned home after the vessel had unintentionally floated away on the tide. This crucial information helped streamline the rescue operation.
Safe Return
Following confirmation that the situation was under control and the owner was safe, the lifeboat crew took charge of the kayak, returning it to Porthallow. There, it was handed over to the awaiting Coastguard team. The lifeboat was released from service at 7:18 pm and returned to the boathouse by 7:35 pm.
Mark Your Equipment for Safety
All water sports enthusiasts should clearly mark their equipment with their contact details. In situations like this, where a kayak or other gear is found adrift, having identifiable information allows rescuers to quickly check on the owner’s safety. This can prevent unnecessary search operations and ensure that the owner is safe and accounted for.
Community Reminder
The Falmouth Lifeboat team reminds everyone that if you see anything unusual or potentially dangerous around the coast, it’s important to dial 999 and request the Coastguard. Such vigilance can prevent potential maritime mishaps and ensure safety along Britain’s beautiful but sometimes treacherous coastline.
