Falmouth Resident Eric Mager Supports RNLI for Third Consecutive Year

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication, former Merchant Navy seaman Eric Mager has once again demonstrated his commitment to supporting the Falmouth RNLI. This marks the third consecutive year that Eric has presented the lifeboat station with a substantial donation, courtesy of the annual Merchant Navy Muster.

A Generous Donation

During his recent visit to the Falmouth Lifeboat Station, Eric Mager handed over a cheque for £1,017.14 to Falmouth RNLI Coxswain Jonathon Blakeston. This amount represents half of the funds raised at this year’s reunion, with the other half being donated to the Kennedy’s Disease UK charity. The total amount was generated through an auction held at the event, where attendees enthusiastically bid on various items, often driving prices to unexpected heights.

A Personal Connection

Eric’s support for the RNLI is deeply personal. Many years ago, he was rescued by the lifeboat service after the fishing boat he was on encountered engine problems. This experience left a lasting impression, reinforcing the importance of the RNLI for all seafarers.

“The reason for supporting the RNLI is that it is a really important institution for merchant seamen and, of course, anybody else at sea,” Eric stated.

The Merchant Navy Muster

The annual Merchant Navy Muster, which has become a significant event for former seamen, was initiated by Eric after a chance meeting with fellow ex-merchant seamen in a pub while visiting relatives in Cleethorpes. The inaugural reunion saw 35 attendees, but the event has grown significantly, with over a hundred participants this year.

The funds raised at the reunion come from an auction of items brought by attendees. This year, the auction was particularly successful, with many items selling at what Eric described as “ridiculous prices,” showcasing the generosity and enthusiasm of the attendees.

Eric Mager’s ongoing efforts and the support of the Merchant Navy community highlight the enduring bond among seafarers and their appreciation for the critical work done by the RNLI. His dedication ensures that vital services like the lifeboat station continue to operate, safeguarding those at sea.
