Cockwells Seeks Next Generation of Talent: Career Fairs, Apprenticeships and Immediate Opportunities

Cockwells Modern & Classic Boatbuilding is ramping up its efforts to nurture the next generation of boatbuilders, with a series of events aimed at attracting new talent. The Falmouth-based company has enrolled a fresh group of apprentices and is set to attend a range of recruitment and career fairs in a bid to secure the future of British boatbuilding.

Training the Future of Boatbuilding

Cockwells has welcomed its second cohort of apprentices into a unique training programme offered in partnership with Cornwall Marine Network. This City & Guilds Level 3 Boatbuilder qualification is the only one of its kind in Cornwall and equips students with the skills needed to forge successful careers in the marine sector.

The 48-month programme provides a blend of hands-on practical experience and classroom learning. For the first three weeks, apprentices focus on developing foundational skills such as joinery and fibreglass layup at Cockwells’ Ponsharden site, The Southwest Shipyard.

Paul Wickes, CEO of Cornwall Marine Network, highlighted the importance of the scheme: “I completed a four-year apprenticeship myself, and it has shaped my career ever since. This programme equips apprentices with skills in production, manufacturing, and more, opening doors to a variety of roles within the boatbuilding industry.”

Upon completion, apprentices can pursue careers as project managers, marine engineers, naval architects, and other specialist roles within the marine sector.

Career Fairs and Recruitment Events

Cockwells is committed to sparking interest in boatbuilding among younger generations. The company will be attending the Penryn College Careers Fair on Wednesday 23rd October. This all-day event will allow students to explore the possibilities offered by a career in the marine industry, with the Cockwells team on hand to discuss qualifications and career paths.

Following its recent partnership with Pendennis Shipyard, Cockwells is also on the lookout for experienced tradespeople and support staff to meet demand, with a busy order book stretching well into 2025. A recruitment open evening will take place at Pendennis Shipyard on Wednesday 23rd October from 5pm to 8pm.

Cockwells’ Managing Director, Dean Short, commented, “Whether you are an experienced tradesperson or starting a new career, we invite you to attend the recruitment evening to learn more about joining our team.”

In addition, Cockwells will be present at Falmouth Marine School’s annual Industry Day on Wednesday 27th November, providing another opportunity for aspiring boatbuilders to meet the team and explore career opportunities.

Opportunities and Flexible Working

Cockwells offers a range of flexible working patterns, with both four- and five-day workweek options available. The company prides itself on offering a collaborative and dynamic team environment that supports career growth.
