Despite the looming threat of Storm Kathleen, the Cornwall Garden Society’s 2024 Spring Flower Show blossomed into a vibrant festival of flora, drawing thousands of visitors to the Royal Cornwall Showground this past weekend.

The showground near Wadebridge transformed into a horticultural haven as gardening aficionados from local and distant locales, including Penzance and Port Isaac, gathered to witness the lush displays. Sponsored by Cornish Lithium and Goonvean Group, the event showcased an impressive range of plant species and garden designs across 158 competitive categories. From magnolias to rhododendrons and daffodils, every corner of the exhibition halls radiated with spring colours, captivating the attendees.

Innovative Garden Designs Steal the Show

At the entrance, a uniquely Cornish garden, designed by the Show Director, Mark, featured dry stone walls and sinuous seating, creating a perfect backdrop for photography and relaxation. This installation, complemented by sculptures from Circle Contemporary Gallery and plants from local nurseries, including Bodmin and Hardy Exotics, served as a central gathering point for visitors.

Expert Talks and Educational Sessions

The show also served as a platform for education and engagement, with Tipi Talks and the Gardeners’ Questions panel offering insights into various gardening topics. Manoj Malde, renowned for his work on BBC TV’s Your Garden Made Perfect, inaugurated the event with a talk on outdoor garden design, based on his new book.

A Marketplace for Garden Enthusiasts

The Plant Pavilion and the Horticultural Heaven areas were bustling with activity, where over 130 master growers, nurseries, and garden traders offered everything from exotic plants to artisan crafts. The Grow Your Own section was particularly popular, featuring unusual herbs and wildflower seeds that provided plenty of take-home ideas for the visitors.

Gourmet Delights and Family Fun

The event was not just about plants and flowers; the Big Pan Parties provided gourmet street food, adding a flavourful twist to the day. Families enjoyed the festive atmosphere, making the most of both the educational sessions and the culinary offerings.

Commendations and Future Prospects

Mark expressed his gratitude towards everyone involved in the show’s success, from volunteers to sponsors. The Cornwall Garden Society President, Charles, also highlighted the unexpected success in terms of participant entries and the quality of displays, considering the prior concerns about adverse weather impacts.

Martin, the Chairman of the Cornwall Garden Society, invited gardening enthusiasts to join the society and partake in future events, hinting at an even more spectacular Spring Flower Show planned for April 2025.

Tune into the Garden Magic

The event wrapped up with a live broadcast on BBC Radio Cornwall, where presenters like Daphne Skinnard and garden experts Sharon, Nigel, and Liam shared the show’s highlights, bringing the experience to those who could not attend. Absorb the atmosphere of the show here.
