World Oceans Day 2025 on 8th June: 4 Simple Ways You Can Help Protect Our Seas

Published On: 5 June 2025Last Updated: 5 June 2025By

As World Oceans Day approaches this Sunday (8th June), there’s a renewed focus on protecting the planet’s oceans – a vital part of life on Earth.

Oceans cover around 70% of the Earth’s surface and support the majority of living organisms. They also play a key role in regulating climate and producing oxygen. But rising pollution, overfishing and habitat destruction are placing increasing pressure on marine environments.

This year’s theme, Catalysing Action for Our Ocean & Climate, is part of a global push to ensure that at least 30% of land, water and ocean is protected by 2030. The aim is to encourage both government and corporate leaders to follow through on their promises. But individuals and families can make a difference too.

Lara Heaney, Deputy Manager at Blue Reef Newquay, has shared some everyday ways people of all ages can support ocean conservation.

“With 70% of the Earth covered by oceans and supporting the majority of organisms, it’s no secret that the world’s waters are crucial for life as we know it.

However, with pollution rising, landfills overflowing, overfishing being difficult to manage, and more issues threatening our oceans, we need to take action to restore these environments.

Healthy oceans support a stable global climate, which is why we need significantly stronger local, national, and international action from both government and corporate leaders.”

4 Ways You Can Help the Ocean

1. Reuse Materials
Before throwing something out, see if it can be reused or repurposed. Whether it’s using plastic bottles in new ways or turning old clothes into cushion covers, getting creative can reduce household waste and help avoid overconsumption.

2. Stay Educated
Books, podcasts, films and documentaries are great ways to learn more about what’s happening to the oceans and why it matters. Staying informed helps people understand the urgency and how they can play a part.

3. See It for Yourself
A visit to the beach or your nearest aquarium can help you connect with marine life. Aquariums like Blue Reef Newquay give a hands-on experience of different species and the ocean’s role in supporting them.

4. Make Considerate Lifestyle Choices
Lara suggests simple changes such as taking shorter showers, recycling, walking instead of driving, and choosing sustainable products. These actions may seem small, but they add up when done by many people.

World Oceans Day is a reminder that while world leaders have a key role to play, everyday decisions can help protect the oceans too.
