Could This Simple Beach Tool Hold the Key to Tackling Microplastics?

A simple yet powerful tool aimed at the next generation of eco-warriors has been launched to help tackle the growing problem of microplastics on our beaches. Meet SCUTTLE the Cuttle, the brainchild of Odyssey Innovation and young beach cleaners, created to inspire children and adults alike to help protect our seas.

A Crisis Hidden in the Sand

Microplastics are now everywhere – in our oceans, in animals, and even in us. On average, humans consume about 5 grams of microplastics each week – roughly the weight of a credit card. These particles can now be found deep in our oceans and, alarmingly, even in human brains and unborn babies.

Unlike visible beach litter, these tiny particles are often impossible to spot. Yet, they pose some of the biggest risks. SCUTTLE the Cuttle was created with this very problem in mind.

What Is SCUTTLE the Cuttle?

SCUTTLE is described as a “toy and tool” combined – designed to make beach cleaning fun and effective. Inspired by the clever design of the cuttlefish, it integrates a bucket, scoop and sieve into one easy-to-carry device. The sieve, with its precisely sized 2.8mm mesh, is specially made to capture microplastics like nurdles and fragments before they break down even further.

Made from recycled marine plastic pellets, the tool is both recyclable and durable. Lightweight and designed for comfort, it fits neatly into any beach bag and works well on both dry and damp sand.

Allicia Fullarton, a Marine Science PhD student focused on Microplastics at the University of Plymouth, describes it as an “interactive device designed primarily for children but equally enjoyable for adults.” She adds, “By turning beach cleaning into a playful and interactive activity, it can engage and inspire people of all ages to participate in cleaning and protecting our local coastlines.”

Why It Matters

The creators believe that empowering children is the only way forward in the fight against plastic pollution. SCUTTLE aims to instil vital environmental values in young people while giving them practical tools to tackle the issue head-on.

Beach Guardian recently tried out SCUTTLE the Cuttle and shared their experience on Facebook: “Designed to empower children and promote marine conservation, Scuttle enables active participation in cleaning up microplastics from our shores. Great in dry sand, great with water with wet sand.”

The Crowdfunder

The campaign to bring SCUTTLE to more communities is now live, with £295 raised so far towards a £10,000 target. With just 14 days left (as of 5th May 2025), supporters are being urged to get behind the project.

By backing the Crowdfunder, supporters will help bring this game-changing tool to more people, turning beach trips into opportunities to make a real difference.

SCUTTLE the Cuttle is not just a simple beach tool. It is a small yet significant step towards cleaner oceans – and a brighter, plastic-free future.
