Cornwall Students Launch “Defend Our Dunes” Campaign to Combat Coastal Erosion
In an inspiring move towards environmental conservation, a group of dedicated students from Newquay University Centre, Cornwall, have initiated the “Defend Our Dunes” Crowdfunder campaign. These students, deeply invested in Conservation studies, have taken a significant step forward in addressing the urgent issues plaguing Cornwall’s coastal areas due to human-induced climate change and coastal erosion.
Cornwall’s coastline, cherished for its pristine beaches, unique ecosystems, and recreational spaces, is facing severe threats from coastal erosion, including cliff collapses, beach closures, and sand instability. These phenomena not only endanger the local flora and fauna but also compromise the sand dunes’ ability to protect coastal regions from storms and floods.
Recognising the crucial role of education in fostering environmental stewardship among future leaders and policymakers, the “Defend Our Dunes” campaign aims to raise awareness and activate community involvement in dune preservation. The students have observed firsthand the devastating impacts of plastic pollution and human disturbance on dune stability. Through their campaign, they seek to enlighten the community on the importance of maintaining the health of these natural barriers.
The primary objective of the campaign is to fund educational packages targeted at young college and university students. These packages, comprising workshops facilitated by the local organisation Beach Guardian, intend to inspire participants to engage in both practical and political environmental activism. The workshops will be offered to educational facilities free of charge, thanks to the campaign’s funding efforts.
Beach Guardian, known for its commitment to coastal conservation, will play a pivotal role in delivering these educational workshops, emphasising the importance of active participation in environmental protection initiatives.
The “Defend Our Dunes” campaign extends an open invitation to the public to support their cause by making donations. By contributing, donors can play a part in empowering the next generation to take a stand for the environment, ensuring the protection of Cornwall’s dunes and, by extension, its coastal heritage.
In a heartfelt appeal, the students encourage the community to follow their journey and join the mission to “Defend Our Dunes,” highlighting the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature: protecting the dunes ensures they continue to protect us.
