Cornwall Set for Sustainable Energy Boost with Proposed Trelion Solar Farm

Published On: 19 January 2024Last Updated: 19 January 2024By

EDF Renewables UK has announced an initiative to bolster sustainable energy in Cornwall with the proposed development of the 47.5 MW Trelion Solar Farm. The renewable energy giant is embarking on a community-focused public consultation process, starting from 31st January, to gather local insights and feedback on the project.

Located to the north of Grampound Road and west of St Stephen, the Trelion Solar Farm is poised to be a significant contributor to the UK’s green energy objectives. Upon completion, it is expected to generate enough low carbon electricity to power up to 9,562 homes annually. This development is not just a boost to Cornwall’s energy capabilities but also aligns with the national goal of a five-fold increase in solar energy by 2035.

As part of its community engagement, EDF Renewables UK is hosting two consultation events at St Stephen Community Centre on 5th and 6th February. These sessions offer residents the opportunity to discuss the project with team members, addressing queries and concerns.

This project aligns with Cornwall Council’s ambitious Carbon Neutral Cornwall Action Plan, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. The Trelion Solar Farm is projected to contribute significantly to this goal by potentially saving approximately 21,598 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Grant Folley, Head of Origination and Planning at EDF Renewables UK, emphasises the project’s dual focus on environmental sustainability and community benefit. The company has committed to a £19,000 annual community fund for local projects over the solar farm’s 40-year projected lifespan. Furthermore, the plan includes significant measures to enhance local biodiversity, including planting new wildflower meadows, hedgerows, and trees.

The Trelion Solar Farm, with a secured grid connection and comprehensive ecological surveys, represents a critical step in the UK’s transition to a green energy future. EDF Renewables UK’s dedication to engaging with local residents and enhancing biodiversity underscores its commitment to being a responsible and beneficial presence in the community.

Residents unable to attend the in-person events can find more information and participate in an online survey on the Trelion Solar Farm page of the EDF Renewables UK website starting from 31 January.

The consultation period extends until 23rd February, with a planning application expected to be submitted to Cornwall Council in Spring 2024.

If approved, site preparation could commence in 2025, with the installation of the solar farm projected to take around nine months.

This initiative marks a significant step towards a sustainable future, where clean energy is at the forefront of powering our lives, homes, and communities.
