Eden Project Sleep Out Returns as Homelessness Crisis Escalates
The Eden Project is set to host its annual Sleep Out event on Thursday, 14th November, inviting supporters to “bed down” outside the renowned Biomes in support of homelessness charities. With homelessness on the rise in the South West, the Sleep Out aims to raise both awareness and crucial funds for Cornwall-based St Petrocs and the Amber Foundation, which supports vulnerable young people across southern England.
Raising Awareness and Funds
Participants at the Sleep Out will experience a full programme, including insightful readings, live music, and talks from homelessness experts and those with lived experience. The evening will include a cookery workshop where attendees will prepare their own dinner alongside Eden Project chefs, followed by breakfast in the morning. For over a decade, the Eden Project has hosted this event, which aligns with its focus on community and positive social impact.
In 2023, the Sleep Out saw approximately 85 participants, raising more than £13,000 for local homelessness initiatives. Since the event’s inception in 2014, hundreds have participated, collectively generating over £100,000 to support those experiencing homelessness.
Growing Crisis in Cornwall and Beyond
This year’s Sleep Out arrives at a critical time, as St Petrocs reports a record number of people accessing their services. The organisation, which works across Cornwall to end homelessness, supported 1,357 people in 2023—an increase of 7% from the previous year. Similarly, the Amber Foundation, which operates four supported housing centres across the south, continues to support young people facing homelessness, with many also contending with mental health issues, substance abuse, or prior involvement with social services.
Both charities anticipate a peak in demand during the winter months, as colder weather drives more people to seek help. “The Sleep Out at the Eden Project is such a meaningful and impactful event,” said Lois Wild, director of engagement at St Petrocs. “The funds raised directly help us deliver emergency accommodation, which last winter supported 338 people who would have otherwise slept outside. Unfortunately, due to growing demand, we expect this figure to rise this year.”
Community and Impact
Dan James, development director at the Eden Project, described the Sleep Out as a core event in Eden’s calendar. “As an educational charity, inspiring action and communicating positive change, the Sleep Out is such a special event,” said Dan. “One night of discomfort for participants can bring meaningful benefits to so many in need. By coming together at events such as this, we can make a real difference in the lives of those facing homelessness.”
Rebecca Fry, fundraising manager at the Amber Foundation, emphasised the event’s lasting impact. “The past decade of Sleep Out events at the Eden Project has been a testament to the power of community and caring. The funds we’ve raised with the help of amazing participants have provided shelter and critical support to hundreds of young people when they needed it most.”
