Celebrating 20 Years of ParkRun – Cornwall’s Park Run Events
This weekend marked an incredible milestone for ParkRun as it celebrated its 20th anniversary. What began as a simple time trial in Bushy Park, London, has evolved into a global movement that has touched millions, including the communities right here in Cornwall. With its stunning landscapes, Cornwall offers some of the most scenic ParkRuns in the UK.
ParkRun’s Humble Beginnings
ParkRun was founded by Paul Sinton-Hewitt in 2004, initially attracting just 13 runners to a 5k run in Bushy Park, London. Over the years, it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, with events in over 20 countries. Today, hundreds of thousands of runners, joggers, and walkers lace up their trainers each week to take part in these free, timed 5k events, with over 2,000 ParkRuns held globally.
Cornwall’s Contribution: Eden Project and More
Cornwall joined the ParkRun family with the launch of the Lanhydrock ParkRun in 2014. Set in the scenic grounds of Lanhydrock House near Bodmin, this ParkRun is renowned for its challenging hills and breathtaking views of the Cornish countryside. It has become a firm favourite among locals and visitors alike.
The Eden Project ParkRun, arguably one of the most unique ParkRuns in the world, started in 2016. Participants have the chance to run through the stunning biomes of the Eden Project, making it a standout experience. The route winds its way through the project’s famous gardens, offering runners a visual treat unlike any other.
Next up is the Penrose ParkRun, which began in 2015. Located near Helston, this flat and fast course takes runners along the beautiful coast of the Penrose Estate. It’s perfect for runners chasing personal bests or those just wanting to enjoy the sea breeze and Cornish scenery.
For those in the west, the Heartlands ParkRun in Pool offers a more urban route through the historic mining area. Since it started in 2018, it has provided a contrast to the more rural ParkRuns in Cornwall, with its flat course and links to Cornwall’s rich industrial heritage.
Finally, the Trelissick ParkRun launched in 2016. Set on the Trelissick Estate near Truro, this route gives participants a mix of woodland and coastal paths, making it a challenging but beautiful run.
Celebrating 20 Years of Running Together
As ParkRun celebrates its 20th year, Cornwall’s ParkRun events will be marking the occasion with extra enthusiasm. Across the county, participants are encouraged to wear milestone t-shirts and join in the festivities.
With ParkRuns spread across Cornwall, from Lanhydrock to Heartlands, there’s no shortage of opportunities for local residents to join in the celebration. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or looking to start your fitness journey, ParkRun offers a welcoming and supportive environment for all.
