Cactus Horticulturalist Wins Prestigious RHS Bursary Prize
In a remarkable achievement for aspiring horticulturists, Melissa Bennett, a dedicated student of the BSc (Hons) Horticulture (Plant Science) Degree at Eden Project University Centre Cornwall College, has been honoured with the 2023 Bursary Report prize by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Bennett’s exceptional contribution to the field, through her report titled “Exploring Desert Plants,” has been recognised for presenting the “highest overall standard,” earning her a prize of £500.
Melissa’s journey into the world of plant science is deeply rooted in her personal passion, inspired by her father’s cactus collection at their home in Suffolk. This passion propelled her to the Eden Project University Centre, part of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), where she not only pursued her academic interests but also embraced practical experiences that broadened her understanding and love for desert flora. Her noteworthy collaboration with Noemí Hernández Castro, a renowned cactus specialist at the Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona, was facilitated by an RHS bursary last year, further cementing her path in horticulture.
Reflecting on her accolade, Melissa expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study at TCCG, stating, “Studying Plant Science degree at TCCG is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I feel very fortunate to have been given an award for doing something that I really love.” Her experience at the Eden Project University Centre has been transformative, offering a unique blend of academic and practical learning experiences.
Chris Bisson, Horticulture Programme Manager at TCCG, praised Melissa’s achievement as a testament to the quality and uniqueness of the institution’s degree programmes. These programmes are meticulously designed to cover various aspects of horticulture, including applied science, crop production, and sustainability, providing students with a comprehensive education that is both theoretical and practical. Bisson highlighted the partnership with the University of Plymouth, which allows students to earn a university-level degree while gaining invaluable hands-on experience at the Eden Project, a renowned visitor attraction and garden.
The Royal Horticultural Society’s positive feedback on Melissa’s report, describing it as “excellent, well structured, clear and concise,” underscores the high standards and dedication of students and faculty at the Eden Project University Centre Cornwall College. Melissa Bennett’s success is not only a personal triumph but also a shining example of the potential and excellence within the field of horticulture education at TCCG.
