In the heart of Cornwall, near Penzance, lies Carn Euny, one of the South West’s most well-preserved ancient villages, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s ancient past. The Cornwall Heritage Trust invites families and history enthusiasts to explore this remarkable site during the half term.
Carn Euny is renowned for its distinctive “courtyard houses,” a feature unique to West Cornwall. These ancient dwellings comprise rooms, huts, workshops, and stables built around a central courtyard, with a significant doorway connecting the courtyard to the village’s lanes and “streets.” Historical evidence suggests the site was occupied from around 500 BC to AD 400, marking it as a significant historical and archaeological site.
The village’s most enigmatic feature is the fogou, a term derived from the Cornish word “vau,” meaning ‘cave’. The Carn Euny fogou is particularly notable for leading to a stone-lined round chamber, now partly collapsed, and is considered an exceptionally well-preserved example. This underground structure includes a passage approximately 20m (65ft) long, a side passage leading to the circular chamber, and a tiny creep-passage that might have been the original entrance. Archaeological excavations have dated the fogou to between 500 and 300 BCE.
Fogous are unique to the British mainland west of the River Fal, and their purpose remains a topic of debate among archaeologists and historians. Theories range from food storage and refuge to ceremonial and religious uses. Visiting Carn Euny offers a rare opportunity to stand within the fogou and ponder its mysterious origins and uses.
The Cornwall Heritage Trust, responsible for 16 historic sites, ensures Carn Euny remains free for public exploration. This commitment to offering universal access to unique historical locations like Carn Euny is made possible through the support of its members.
Visitors can expect to see not only the ancient village from above but also the intriguing interiors of the fogou and its side passages, offering an immersive experience into Cornwall’s ancient heritage.
