Zero Tolerance: Police Warn Against Drink Driving and Anti-Social Behaviour at Royal Cornwall Show

Published On: 5 June 2024Last Updated: 5 June 2024By

Devon & Cornwall Police are issuing a stark warning to attendees of the Royal Cornwall Show, urging them to plan their journeys home and designate a sober driver before arriving at the event.

The show, scheduled from Thursday 6 June to Saturday 8 June, is expected to draw large crowds, prompting the police to enhance their patrols to maintain road safety and prevent drink driving.

Increased Patrols and Zero Tolerance

Inspector Adam Stonehill emphasised the importance of road safety during the event. “We will be increasing patrols of local roads to deter drink driving, which we take a zero-tolerance approach to. Our message is, do not drive home if you have had a drink as you risk your life and the lives of others. Please take advantage of public transport to the show or arrange lifts in advance,” he stated. The police are prepared to prosecute anyone found driving under the influence, potentially resulting in a driving ban.

High Visibility and Anti-Social Behaviour

In addition to patrolling local roads, police teams from Bodmin and Wadebridge will conduct high visibility patrols at the show and in surrounding areas. The police are keen to ensure that all attendees can enjoy the show without disruptions caused by anti-social behaviour. Inspector Stonehill reiterated this point, noting that recommendations from last year’s debrief have been implemented to enhance the overall experience for attendees. He also warned that those who engage in anti-social behaviour could face a ban from the event.

Traffic and Safety Advisories

Attendees are advised to plan their routes in advance due to expected congestion and delays. Heavy traffic is anticipated over the three-day event, and a temporary speed limit of 30 MPH will be enforced along the A39 at Hals Grave.

In the event of suspicious activity, anti-social behaviour, or attempts to drive under the influence of alcohol, attendees are encouraged to report these incidents to event security, police officers, or through various hotlines including 101, 999 for immediate risks, and Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111. Updates on the event can also be found on the Bodmin Police Facebook page.

Plan Ahead for a Safe Event

With these measures in place, Devon & Cornwall Police aim to ensure a safe and enjoyable Royal Cornwall Show for everyone. Attendees are urged to respect others, adhere to safety guidelines, and make use of public transport or arrange sober drivers to avoid any legal repercussions and ensure the safety of all road users.
