Truro Hero: Volunteer Special Constable Wins Prestigious Award
Incredible Volunteer Efforts Recognised
Special Constable (SC) Dave Christophers, a dedicated volunteer with the Truro policing team, has been honoured with the Special Constable of the Year award at the Police Annual Recognition Awards. Despite joining the force only two years ago, Dave has quickly established himself as a vital member of the team.
Exemplary Service and Commitment
Dave’s commitment to his role is reflected in the impressive 1,200 hours of voluntary service he has contributed over the past year alone, far exceeding the expected volunteer hours by 1,000. His dedication has seen him respond to nearly all types of emergency and non-emergency calls independently, making 18 arrests and assisting in a further 20.
Community Engagement and Speed Detection
Dave is one of only two special constables in Cornwall to receive the highest level of speed detection training. This expertise has enabled him to patrol local roads effectively, identifying and fining 1,522 speeding drivers. His proactive engagement with local residents and organisations has been crucial in gathering intelligence and addressing community concerns about speeding.
Commendable Incident Management
One notable incident showcasing Dave’s professionalism involved handling a situation with a ‘paedophile hunter’ group. Despite the pressure of the event being live-streamed on social media, Dave managed the complex situation with sensitivity and competence. He ensured that all necessary checks were conducted before making an arrest, demonstrating his thorough approach and commitment to justice.
High Praise from Supervisors
Special Superintendent Scott Kneebone praised Dave’s impact on the community, highlighting how his work has increased local confidence in the police. Scott remarked, “Dave’s interaction with the community has not only kept our roads safer by reprimanding speeding drivers but has also increased local people’s confidence in our local officers thanks to the positive results his work has achieved. We have received some extremely positive feedback from local people.”
Scott added, “In the short time Dave has been with the team, he has made a huge impact within his local community. His professional handling of the complex situation with the ‘paedophile hunter’ group is a testament to his abilities. We are so lucky to have Dave on our team, and we are proud of the great work he has done, and continues to do, for the community.”
