Shoplifting Hits Record Levels in Devon and Cornwall – Over 8,000 Offences Reported in the Past Year
Shoplifting offences in Devon and Cornwall have soared to unprecedented levels, with over 8,000 incidents reported in the past year alone. A new investigation reveals that the region is experiencing its highest shoplifting figures in the last five years, mirroring the sharp rise seen across the UK.
Shoplifting Surge Across Devon and Cornwall
According to data from Personal Injury Claims UK, Devon and Cornwall Constabulary has recorded a total of 28,703 shoplifting offences since April 2021. The situation has intensified since 2023, with the latest figures indicating that shoplifting in the region has reached record highs.
Over the past year, 8,021 offences were logged in 2023/24, compared to 6,152 in 2022/23. This marks a significant increase and aligns with a wider national trend. The Office for National Statistics recently reported a 30% rise in shoplifting across England and Wales, bringing the total number of offences to a 20-year high.
Impact of COVID-19 and Rising Cost of Living
The data also highlights a drop in shoplifting offences during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019/20, 6,087 offences were reported, but this number fell to 4,642 during the next two years due to restrictions and lockdowns. However, since restrictions were lifted, shoplifting has steadily increased, reaching its highest level yet.
Experts suggest the ongoing cost of living crisis could be driving the rise in thefts. Retailers like Co-op and John Lewis have reported record levels of crime, including incidents of abuse and violence towards staff.
Record Losses for Businesses
The financial impact on businesses has been severe. Theft losses doubled in the past year, reaching £1.8 billion, while spending on anti-crime measures has also surged to £1.2 billion, up from £950 million the previous year.
Despite these alarming statistics, reports indicate that prosecutions have not kept pace with the growing number of offences. According to research conducted by The Times, police responses to shoplifting have significantly decreased, leaving many shoplifters unpunished.
