In a move to reduce motorcycle-related deaths and injuries, Devon & Cornwall Police have unveiled a new state-of-the-art motorcycle safety simulator.

This innovative approach aims to enhance the hazard awareness and riding skills of inexperienced motorcyclists, thereby improving road safety.

Simulator Introduction

The new simulator, the first of its kind in the UK, incorporates a real Honda CB500X motorcycle and is equipped with custom software that tests riders’ responses to various road conditions. This initiative is part of ‘Project APEX’, a national scheme focused on reducing motorcycle casualties.

Motorcycle riders, starting from 16 years of age, can experience a variety of virtual road layouts, weather conditions, and traffic scenarios through integrated video screens that offer a 360-degree immersive experience. The simulator includes realistic controls such as brakes, clutch, throttle, and indicators, and features vibration feedback, surround sound, and working wing mirrors to mimic real-life riding as closely as possible.

Background and Impact

Motorcyclists are disproportionately affected in road traffic incidents in Devon and Cornwall. They account for nearly 21% of road deaths in the region, despite making up just 1% of road traffic. In 2022 alone, 16 motorcyclists died, and another 187 suffered serious injuries on local roads.

In response, Devon & Cornwall Police initiated several measures under Operation Cosset, which saw a significant 56% decrease in motorcycle-related deaths and serious injuries in 2023. These measures included the use of police drones to monitor and educate risky riders, collaboration with local dealerships for training rides, and safety awareness sessions conducted by the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

Motorcycle Casualty Reduction Efforts

Ian Harvey, the Motorcycle Casualty Reduction Officer, stressed the high-risk nature of motorcyclists’ presence on the road and the potential of the new simulator to prevent fatal and severe accidents. “We’re hoping the simulator will help us to provide vital skills to inexperienced riders in a safe environment,” he commented.

Partnership and Support

Natalie Warr, the partnership manager of Vision Zero South West, highlighted the community’s support for the police’s innovative methods to enhance road safety. She referenced successful collaborations, such as the behavioural change campaign with biker legend Henry Cole, which have already shown promising results.

Looking Ahead

The simulator will be showcased across various educational institutions and public events throughout Devon and Cornwall to raise awareness and gather feedback. Notable appearances include the Bideford Motorcycle Show, Mega Ride Festival, Devon County Show, and national events like the Motor GP and British Superbikes.

For details on upcoming events or to book the simulator, interested parties are encouraged to visit Vision Zero South West’s dedicated page.

This proactive approach by Devon & Cornwall Police, supported by Vision Zero South West, is a pioneering step towards significantly reducing motorcycle casualties on UK roads through education, technology, and community engagement.
