Police provide extra support for those at risk of abuse during Euro 2024

In anticipation of the Euro 2024 football tournament, Devon & Cornwall Police are stepping up efforts to combat domestic abuse and anti-social behaviour.

Historically, domestic abuse reports surge during major sporting events, and this year, authorities are preparing to protect those at risk.

Increased Risk During Tournaments

According to the National Centre for Domestic Violence, the intensity and passion surrounding knock-out football tournaments often correlate with a spike in domestic abuse incidents. Detective Inspector Ben Ferguson emphasised that while most football fans do not engage in abusive behaviour, it is crucial to remain vigilant. “Passionate support of any sport does not justify domestic abuse,” Ferguson stated, adding that the police are working with partners to support those at increased risk during the tournament.

Proactive Measures in Place

Devon & Cornwall Police are dedicating additional resources to tackle potential violence and ensure the safety of vulnerable individuals. Ferguson reassured the public of the police’s commitment to identifying perpetrators and protecting victims. “We are committed to supporting and protecting victims at all times, not just during sporting events,” he said. The force encourages both victims and those displaying abusive behaviour to seek help through various support agencies.

Support from the Police and Crime Commissioner

Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall, and the Isles of Scilly, highlighted the anxiety that major sporting events can trigger for those living with domestic abuse. Hernandez expressed her support for the police’s enhanced measures, noting the wide range of abuse forms beyond physical violence, including emotional, financial, and controlling behaviours. “Any type of abuse is unacceptable,” Hernandez stated, urging victims to reach out for support.

Seeking Help

Authorities urge anyone experiencing or witnessing abuse to contact the police or support agencies without delay. Victims can find guidance at domesticabusehelp.co.uk, while those displaying abusive behaviour can seek assistance at respect.uk.net. Additional support for crime victims is available through victimcare-dc.org or by contacting Victim Support on 08 08 16 89 111.

For immediate safety concerns, the public is reminded to dial 999.

Devon & Cornwall Police’s proactive stance during Euro 2024 aims to create a safer environment, ensuring that the joy of the tournament does not come at the cost of personal safety and well-being.
