‘Parking Fine’ Scam Texts on the Rise: Devon and Cornwall Police Issue Warning
Devon and Cornwall Police have issued a warning after reports of scam texts circulating, falsely alleging parking fines. These messages are part of a wider trend of phishing scams, aiming to trick recipients into clicking malicious links or making payments under false pretences.
Be Cautious of Unexpected Messages
The police advise caution when receiving unexpected texts or emails, whether they claim to be a fine, an exclusive discount, or a message asking for assistance. These scams often carry an urgent tone, designed to pressurise individuals into swift action. Police warn not to click on any links in these messages.
Residents are encouraged to be particularly cautious if asked to make payments, download apps, or purchase gift cards or vouchers, even if the message implies they are for family members. Police recommend contacting loved ones directly to confirm any unusual requests for financial help.
Reporting Suspicious Messages
To report a suspicious text, you can forward it for free to 7726, which allows authorities to track and investigate these scams. Avoid responding to or clicking on links in any dubious messages, and block the number if possible.
For those who have already fallen victim to these scams, Devon and Cornwall Police recommend contacting your bank or building society immediately. Following this, incidents can be reported to Action Fraud, either online or by phoning 0300 123 2040.
Stay vigilant and protect yourself from fraud by remaining cautious with unexpected messages and avoiding unnecessary clicks.
