One Is One Too Many: Police Crack Down on Festive Drink and Drug Driving

Published On: 19 December 2024Last Updated: 19 December 2024By

As the festive season gathers pace, Devon and Cornwall Police are urging drivers to stay safe on the roads and avoid consuming alcohol or drugs if they plan to drive. With many people travelling to see loved ones or attend seasonal events, the message is clear: don’t risk it.

A Clear Warning for Drivers

Sgt Owen Messenger from the Roads Policing Team issued a stark reminder, saying: “If you are driving and consuming alcohol or drugs you are risking your own life as well as the lives of other innocent road users.”

While the advice applies year-round, this week is particularly significant due to the rise in festive celebrations. “If you are driving, one is one too many,” Owen emphasised.

Serious Consequences Await

Drivers caught under the influence face severe penalties. A conviction could result in a driving ban of at least 12 months, a hefty fine, and potential repercussions at home and work.

Police officers as part of Operation Limit will be out on patrol, actively monitoring road networks, responding to intelligence, and taking action against those who take risks behind the wheel.

Think Ahead

The consequences of drink or drug driving extend far beyond legal ramifications. Owen highlighted the emotional toll, saying, “All too often, a family is bereaved and left to pick up the pieces as the result of the actions of a drink or drug driver.”

Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance by organising a designated driver or booking alternative transport. Owen also reminded drivers that alcohol and drugs can remain in the system the next day. “If in doubt, do not get behind the wheel; there is no excuse for putting yourself and others at risk,” he said.

Devon and Cornwall Police urge everyone to prioritise safety this festive season and avoid a decision that could lead to tragedy.
