Neighbourhood Policing Week: Bex Shares What It’s Really Like to Be a PCSO
PCSO Bex Steed reflects on 19 years of service in Liskeard during Neighbourhood Policing Week
As part of Neighbourhood Policing Week, Devon & Cornwall Police are shining a light on the work of their neighbourhood teams — and for Police Community Support Officer Bex Steed, the job has always been personal.
Bex has spent the past 19 years working across neighbourhoods in Liskeard, and for her, being a PCSO is more than a career.
“I became a PCSO because I care about people, I love being social and I wanted to be out in the community helping those in need,” said Bex.
On the Streets and in the Schools
PCSOs are a visible and vital link between communities and the police. They’re often the friendly, familiar faces you see at local events, outside schools or walking through town centres.
“A huge part of what I do is about being visible,” Bex said. “Whether that’s by carrying out high-vis patrols, holding community events to listen to local concerns or visiting schools – all my work is key in providing a reassuring, friendly face across Liskeard, as well as a listening ear.”
From tackling antisocial behaviour to supporting vulnerable residents, PCSOs play a crucial role in building trust and keeping people safe.
Two Decades of Making a Difference
Over nearly 20 years, Bex has helped resolve long-term crime issues, carried out countless school visits, and supported young people and adults alike.
In May 2025, she received a Chief Superintendent award in recognition of her work educating young people about online safety and the dangers of sending inappropriate images — work that has helped protect hundreds of young people.
“Seeing people – both youngsters and adults – who you’ve helped, whether that’s encouraging them to make safe decisions, protecting them from being a victim of crime, or just providing them with support when they’re in need, it’s such a worthwhile and important role.”
“I absolutely love what I do and look forward to continue working across Liskeard.”
