Make the White Ribbon Promise: Stand Against Violence on White Ribbon Day
Devon & Cornwall Police are urging men and boys to pledge their commitment to ending violence against women and girls as part of White Ribbon Day on 25th November. The national day of remembrance and action highlights the need for collective action to create a safer society, encouraging everyone to make the White Ribbon promise to “never use, excuse or remain silent about men’s violence against women.”
A Clear Message: Nobody Should Live in Fear
Acting Chief Constable Jim Colwell, speaking on behalf of Devon & Cornwall Police, stressed the importance of this event, stating:
“The message is loud and clear – nobody should live in fear.”
Jim added that the force is committed to supporting White Ribbon Day and improving outcomes for victims of violence, particularly women and girls.
“This is a key priority for the Force,” he said.
16 Days of Activism
Coinciding with White Ribbon Day, the Force will also be launching its ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign, which will run until 10 December. This campaign aims to raise awareness and prevent violence through a variety of activities and events across Devon and Cornwall, including:
- Talks and webinars
- Storytelling sessions and films
- Candlelit vigils and exhibitions
- Workshops and a flashmob in Exeter
Information about events in Cornwall can be found on the Safer Cornwall website.
Encouraging Reporting and Awareness
Devon & Cornwall Police are asking the public to report any incidents of violence or harassment via the Force website. For those in immediate danger, calling 999 remains the priority.
Jim highlighted the importance of addressing these issues proactively:
“We are focusing on the identification, pursuit, and prosecution of perpetrators of violence, and other offending, against women and girls, and bringing those perpetrators to justice.”
Detective Superintendent Nicky Seager echoed this commitment, adding:
“White Ribbon Day and the 16 days campaign help to raise awareness about this issue and provide messaging around calling out behaviours of concern and preventing violence against women and girls.”
Supporting Vulnerable People
Neighbourhood teams are actively working with local authorities, community safety partnerships, charities, and other support agencies to ensure the safety of women and girls. For anyone feeling vulnerable while out at night, support is available.
Updates and event details will be shared on Devon & Cornwall Police’s corporate social media channels, alongside safety messaging. For more information about White Ribbon Day, visit the White Ribbon website.
