Former Devon & Cornwall Officer Tackles 4,500-Mile European Charity Journey
Tim Stevens sets off for Croatia in vintage Volkswagen Beetle
Tim Stevens, a former detention officer with Devon & Cornwall Police, is preparing to embark on an epic 4,500-mile European road trip to raise funds for the veteran and emergency service charity, Rock2Recovery.
On 21 September, Tim will leave from Charlestown in Cornwall, driving his 18-year-old Volkswagen Beetle, fondly nicknamed Ringo, to Split in Croatia. The two-week journey will see him travelling across Europe with around 100 other drivers, all of whom will be participating in this unique fundraising challenge.
A Personal Mission for a Worthy Cause
After spending 11 years as a detention officer, Tim now works as a Facilities Manager for Devon & Cornwall Police. His decision to support Rock2Recovery stems from a personal connection to the charity, which provides vital support to serving and retired armed forces members, as well as emergency service personnel.
Tim explains: “Rock2Recovery is a charity that is close to my heart, along with many other people in Devon & Cornwall Police. It provides support, guidance, and coaching to serving and retired members of the armed forces and emergency services. People who work in these sectors face many unique and difficult challenges. It’s so important that colleagues have access to resources and supportive communities who can help people manage these issues, their wellbeing, and mental health.”
Tim hopes that this journey will not only raise money but also spread awareness about the work Rock2Recovery does for individuals struggling with mental health issues.
Ringo the Beetle Takes Centre Stage
The charity challenge stipulates that all participants must purchase a car that’s over 18 years old, costing less than £1,000. For Tim, Ringo—a vintage Volkswagen Beetle—fits the bill perfectly. He’ll be accompanied on the trip by his wife Rachel, who will be sharing the wheel and the experience.
Tim adds: “It’s going to be an interesting journey, that’s for sure! Our Volkswagen Beetle, nicknamed Ringo, is 18 years old and has a good few miles on the clock. Luckily, I’ll have my wife Rachel joining me every step of the way. Part of the challenge also requires us to be in fancy dress, so we’ve opted for Slash and Axl from Guns N’ Roses.”
Supporting Colleagues Across the Force
Tim’s challenge has garnered support from many within Devon & Cornwall Police. Chief Superintendent Scott Bradley, who leads Plymouth’s policing teams, expressed his admiration: “This is a fantastic challenge for such a worthwhile cause. I know the charity has been there to support many of our colleagues across the Force. I am wishing Tim and Rachel (and Ringo) lots of luck. I hope they enjoy every minute of the challenge.”
Rock2Recovery’s Lifesaving Work
Rock2Recovery focuses on saving and changing lives through coaching and support for members of the armed forces, veterans, and emergency services, as well as their families. They aim to inspire individuals towards a positive future, providing free resources to help manage stress and mental health challenges.
As Tim and Rachel prepare to hit the road, their journey is not just about covering miles—it’s about driving change for a cause that means the world to them.
