Euro 2024 Warning: Police Say ‘Alcohol Isn’t an Excuse for Bad Behaviour’

Published On: 17 June 2024Last Updated: 17 June 2024By

As the European Football Championship 2024 approaches, Devon & Cornwall Police are advising football fans to enjoy the games responsibly and reminding them that alcohol is not an excuse for bad behaviour.

Busy Pubs Expected

With England and Scotland competing in Germany against 22 other teams, the excitement is palpable. Pubs are expected to be bustling with fans cheering on their national teams. However, the police emphasise the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful atmosphere.

A police representative highlighted the potential for alcohol to change people’s behaviour, stating, “Everyone is always excited to follow the national team’s progress and many will be making plans to watch matches with friends and family. However, the police are being clear that alcohol is not an excuse for bad behaviour, win, lose or draw. Alcohol can and will change people’s behaviour. With emotions running high, things can easily go from friendly banter to something more aggressive.”

Ending the Night Safely

Fans are reminded that while they cannot control the final score of the matches, they can ensure their night ends safely by drinking responsibly. The police warn that excessive drinking can lead to aggression and other unsafe behaviours, urging fans to prioritise their safety and the safety of others.

“There is a potential for drivers to still be over the limit the morning after the match,” the representative continued. “Many still do not realise how long it takes for alcohol to be out of your system. A morning coffee isn’t the answer; the only solution is time. So please take the time to think about how you’ll be getting home after the final whistle.”

Support for Excessive Drinking

For those concerned about their own or others’ drinking habits, resources are available. Devon & Cornwall Police direct individuals to visit www.dc.police.uk/drugs-alcohol-support for assistance and information.

As Euro 2024 promises to be an exciting summer of football, Devon & Cornwall Police urge fans to enjoy the games responsibly and remember that good behaviour is paramount, regardless of the match outcomes.
