Devon & Cornwall Police Win National Award for Roadside Safety Operation

Devon & Cornwall Police have won the prestigious ‘Compliance and Engagement’ award for their outstanding commitment to road safety.

The recognition follows a significant roadside operation conducted by the force’s Road Casualty Reduction team earlier this year.

Successful Collaboration for Safety

In February 2024, officers partnered with TyreSafe Manager, Jason Simms, and the DVSA to perform spot checks on vehicles in Cowley, Exeter. The operation was initiated after research indicated that the South West of England was a high-risk area for non-compliant tyres. During the checks, over 50 cars were stopped, and motorists received valuable advice along with free tyre safety checks provided by TyreSafe.

National Recognition

The award was presented at the annual TyreSafe awards ceremony, held on 13 June at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham. The judges commended Devon & Cornwall Police for their instrumental role in raising tyre safety awareness. They highlighted how the joint efforts garnered extensive media coverage on prominent platforms like the BBC and ITV, successfully conveying the importance of regular tyre maintenance to a broader audience.

Sgt. Owen Messenger of the Road Casualty Reduction team expressed his gratitude for the award, stating, “We’re really honoured to have been presented with the TyreSafe ‘Compliance and Engagement’ award. The team work tirelessly every day, and it’s encouraging to see their valuable efforts recognised by national organisations. We’re committed to keeping people safe on our roads and will continue to work with our partners both locally and nationally to reduce the number of serious and fatal collisions in Devon and Cornwall.”
