Devon & Cornwall Police Issue Warning on Dangerous Illegal Vapes Among Teens
In response to a concerning rise in the usage of illegal vapes among teenagers, Devon & Cornwall Police have launched a targeted campaign to educate young individuals about the dangers associated with vaping liquids that have been illicitly substituted with Class B drugs such as THC (the active compound in cannabis) and spice (a synthetic cannabinoid). These substances, due to their unregulated nature, pose unknown health risks, which have already led to hospitalisations across other regions.
Urgent Educational Outreach
The police force’s Child Centred Policing Team has taken proactive steps by visiting eight secondary schools in the Plymouth area. The objective is to enlighten students on the health hazards and legal repercussions of using or possessing vapes infused with THC or spice. Reports have emerged of schoolchildren using these dangerous vapes before attending school, resulting in their arrival in an unwell condition.
Through assemblies targeted at year eight, nine, and ten pupils since the end of January, officers have detailed the legal framework surrounding vape usage. It is highlighted that the law strictly prohibits the sale of vapes to individuals under 18 and mandates that vapes contain no more than 2ml of liquid with a maximum strength of 20mg/ml. More gravely, possession of vapes laced with THC or spice could attract a penalty of up to five years in prison or an unlimited fine, with the stakes even higher for those caught supplying.
Legal Implications and Police Powers
Sarah, a member of the police team, underscored the gravity of possessing vapes filled with unregulated drugs, stressing the significant health threats they pose. The police’s educational campaign aims to make teenagers reconsider the use of such vapes, with ongoing efforts to extend the reach of this important message to more schools in Plymouth.
In a novel approach to tackle this issue head-on, the police have collaborated with Public Health to establish protocols for addressing incidents involving children vaping unknown substances. This includes upskilling officers and staff to ensure they are prepared to respond effectively to such situations.
Collaborative Efforts and Community Advice
In an operation to enforce compliance, Devon & Cornwall Police and Police Cadets supported Trading Standards in a test purchase operation. This operation revealed non-compliance by one out of six shops tested, leading to further actions by Trading Standards and plans for more joint operations in the future.
For teenagers, parents, or educators seeking advice or help regarding drug use or vaping, the police encourage reaching out to local organisations such as SHARP, The Zone in Plymouth, as well as consulting with GPs and educational staff.
The concerted effort by Devon & Cornwall Police reflects a significant commitment to safeguarding the health and future prospects of the region’s youth from the perils of illegal drug-laced vapes.
