Devon and Cornwall Residents Encouraged to Join Keyholder Scheme for Emergency Access

Published On: 9 March 2024Last Updated: 9 March 2024By

Residents and businesses in Devon and Cornwall are being encouraged to sign up for a keyholder scheme that allows emergency services to quickly access buildings during incidents.

The Devon and Cornwall Police have been operating this keyholder information database for over a decade, facilitating swift responses to emergencies by alerting designated individuals when issues arise at a property.

The scheme is designed to assist both businesses and individual residents by maintaining a record of contacts authorised to access a property in case of an emergency. Information about keyholders is stored for two years, after which participants are reminded to update their information to ensure their availability in future incidents.

Registration is open to both residential and commercial property owners. The scheme enables emergency services to efficiently contact responsible individuals in various situations, including potential dangers such as flooding or pollution. It is particularly beneficial for properties without alarm systems, as it ensures that the emergency services have a point of contact even in the absence of the owner.

A spokesperson from the Force’s Alarms Team highlighted the advantages of participating in the scheme, emphasising its role in ensuring that a responsible person can be notified if an incident occurs at their property. They praised the scheme’s decade-long success and urged both new and existing members to register or update their information to keep the system current.

The service, offered free of charge by the Devon and Cornwall Police, has been commended for its effectiveness in enhancing the safety and security of the community. For more information or to register for the scheme, residents and business owners can visit the Devon and Cornwall Police website.

This keyholder scheme represents a proactive approach to community safety, ensuring peace of mind for property owners throughout Devon and Cornwall.
