Bodmin Magistrates Court Extends Closure Order on Property to Combat Anti-Social Behaviour

Published On: 27 February 2024Last Updated: 27 February 2024By

In a move aimed at curbing anti-social behaviour, Bodmin Magistrates Court has granted an extension to a closure order on a property in Bodmin, as announced on Wednesday, 21 February. This decision has been met with widespread approval from both the local police force and the residents of Bodmin, who have been adversely affected by the disruptive actions of the property’s tenants.

The property in question became a focal point for anti-social activities, with reports of incessant disturbances and unruly behaviour by its occupants. The situation escalated to the point where the local police, armed with intelligence and crime reports, executed a drug warrant and increased patrols in the vicinity. Additionally, compelling testimonies from aggrieved neighbours played a crucial role in the initial imposition of the closure order.

A closure order essentially prohibits entry to the designated property for a set duration, penalising unauthorised access with potential imprisonment or fines. The enforcement of this order has brought relief to the community, significantly reducing disturbances and contributing to a more peaceful living environment.

The decision to extend the closure order comes as the original mandate neared its expiration. This proactive measure aims to prevent the return of the problematic tenants and allows the housing association involved ample time to undertake legal proceedings for regaining possession of the property. The ultimate goal is to restore the property to a condition that is conducive to occupancy by responsible tenants.

PC Andy Currie highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Devon & Cornwall Police, Cornwall Council Anti-Social Behaviour Enforcement Team, and the housing association in achieving this extension. He emphasised the strong message this action sends to potential offenders about the community’s intolerance towards anti-social behaviour.

This development follows closely on the heels of another closure order issued on 30 January against a different property, also in Bodmin, which had been a source of serious nuisance and disorder for over six years.
The Bodmin neighbourhood policing team continues to address and mitigate anti-social behaviour proactively. Residents are encouraged to report any incidents or concerns directly through the Devon & Cornwall Police website, ensuring that the community remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
