Are Your Kids at Risk? Liskeard Police Sound Alarm on Dangerous Vaping Trends
Awareness Assemblies at Liskeard School and Community College
PCSO Bex has been engaging with students at Liskeard School and Community College every day this week, delivering assemblies to all year groups. The sessions aim to raise awareness of the growing dangers associated with vaping, particularly among underage users.
During the assemblies, students were informed about the increasing prevalence of illegal vapes being sold to children. Key points included identifying illegal vapes, such as those offering more than 600 puffs or missing health warnings.
Dangerous Substances Found in Confiscated Vapes
PCSO Bex also shared alarming findings from a 2024 operation conducted by Devon and Cornwall Police across 13 secondary schools. Confiscated vapes and vape liquids were tested, with 15% containing Spice—a synthetic cannabinoid and Class B drug, which is illegal. Spice and THC are designed to mimic cannabis effects, further raising concerns about the substances young people may unknowingly inhale.
Disposable Vapes Ban Coming in 2025
Parents and students were reminded of the upcoming ban on disposable vapes, which will take effect from 1st June 2025. Additionally, police highlighted the fire risks associated with improper disposal of vapes. The batteries in disposable vapes should not be discarded in domestic or public bins but should instead be taken to recycling centres for safe disposal.
Risks Beyond the Vape Itself
Another issue raised was the trend of young people hiding vapes in undergarments, such as bras and waistbands. This behaviour was flagged as a potential risk to their safety.
Liskeard School reaffirmed its commitment to creating a safe environment for students. Any child seeking help to quit vaping or with concerns about vaping has been encouraged to reach out to school staff or a healthcare professional.
Parents Encouraged to Take Action
Parents have been urged to discuss the risks of vaping with their children and remain vigilant. Anyone with information regarding the sale of illegal vapes is encouraged to contact Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111 or via their website.
Stay informed and ensure your child understands the risks.
