Are You Overtaking Safely? Call to Respect Mobility Scooter Users on the Road

Published On: 27 November 2024Last Updated: 28 November 2024By

Mobility scooter users often face challenges when sharing the road with larger, faster vehicles, according to a reminder issued by Vision Zero South West. With some scooters only capable of reaching speeds of up to 8mph on the road, users can find overtaking vehicles travelling at 20 or 30mph intimidating and potentially hazardous.

Where Mobility Scooters Can Travel

While Class 2 and 3 mobility scooters are permitted to use pavements, footpaths, and bridleways, accessing roads is often essential for reaching key locations. Vision Zero South West is urging all road users to consider the safety and well-being of mobility scooter users who rely on roadways for parts of their journeys.

Mobility Scooters & The Road

Mobility scooters are generally divided into two categories: Class 2 and Class 3. While Class 2 scooters are designed primarily for pavement use, Class 3 scooters can be used on roads but must adhere to specific rules. These include having a maximum speed of 8mph and being equipped with indicators, headlights, and a horn for road safety. For more detailed information, including requirements and restrictions, visit the UK Government’s guide to mobility scooter rules.

Reporting Dangerous Road Users

Drivers are being encouraged to respect all road users and exercise care when overtaking mobility scooters. Anyone witnessing dangerous behaviour on the road can report it via Op Snap, a service provided by Devon and Cornwall Police. Video footage of dangerous driving can be submitted online through the Op Snap webpage.

With the safety of vulnerable road users in focus, the call is clear: share the roads with respect and ensure everyone feels safe while travelling.
