Cornwall Wildlife Trust is set to welcome nature enthusiasts back for another year of its acclaimed Open Gardens season.

From the 7th of April until the end of September, the Trust is inviting the public to explore the hidden horticultural gems of Cornwall, celebrating the start of a season that promises new delights and continues a proud tradition of conservation and community engagement.

New Additions and Wildlife Wonders

This year, the programme is excited to introduce two new spectacular gardens: Suffree Farm near Probus, a two-acre wildlife haven where visitors can interact with rare breed pigs and Shetland ponies, and a uniquely tropical retreat at Trelan in St Ives. These additions are set to provide a fresh perspective on the diversity of Cornwall’s flora and fauna.

The Open Gardens events span a variety of wildlife-friendly habitats, including wildflower meadows, enchanting woodlands, serene ponds, and historical walled gardens, offering an inspiring insight into the ways gardens can contribute to wildlife conservation.

Engagement and Education

Sam Lucock, Community Fundraising and Support Officer, shared the enthusiasm surrounding the programme’s return, highlighting the inclusion of wildlife experts at the events to enrich the visitor experience. The season also features special events, like performances from the Garker Street Band and showcases by local artists, adding a cultural flourish to the botanical explorations.

A Testament to Volunteer Spirit

The success of the Open Gardens programme is a testament to the dedication of its volunteers. Becky David, the Volunteer Coordinator, expressed her pride in the community’s efforts to support the Trust’s mission through these events. Since its inception, the Open Gardens season has raised over £130,000, aiding Cornwall Wildlife Trust in its vital conservation work.

Culinary Delights and Community Support

Adding to the charm of the Open Gardens season are the culinary delights prepared by volunteers, featuring home-baked cakes and scones served with local Rodda’s clotted cream. Beverages are generously donated by Cornico, Daymer Bay Drinks, and other local supporters, ensuring visitors can enjoy a taste of Cornwall’s finest produce while soaking in the beauty of its gardens.

Explore and Support

The Open Gardens season offers a unique opportunity to explore private gardens that are otherwise inaccessible to the public, providing a window into the dedicated efforts of garden owners to create wildlife-friendly spaces. For more information on the programme and to view the full schedule, enthusiasts are encouraged to visit the Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Open Gardens webpage.

This year’s Open Gardens season not only promises a journey through Cornwall’s most exquisite private gardens but also a chance to contribute to the preservation of its natural beauty for generations to come.
