East Cornwall Search & Rescue: A Birthday to Remember Amidst Nature’s Challenge
On the afternoon of 31st March, a call for assistance was received by the East Cornwall Search & Rescue Team (ECSRT), marking a moment of swift action and community warmth in the picturesque yet treacherous terrains of Golitha.
Devon & Cornwall Police, responding to an urgent request, engaged the ECSRT following a distress signal sent to the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust concerning a hiker who had sustained a lower leg injury.
Upon arrival, ECSRT’s trained volunteers quickly assessed the situation, determining the nature and extent of the casualty’s injury. With proficiency and care, the team stabilised the injured hiker, employing specialised equipment to ensure her comfort and safety during the extraction process. The subsequent short journey to the awaiting ambulance was carried out with efficiency and compassion, showcasing the team’s commitment to the welfare of those they serve.
A Unique Celebration
In a heartwarming twist, just before the handover to the medical crew, the rescue team and bystanders gathered to sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to the casualty, elevating spirits and wishing her a rapid recovery. This act of kindness underscores the community’s spirit and the personal touch the ECSRT brings to its rescue operations, going beyond the call of duty to provide emotional support and cheer to those in distress.
Supporting the Unsung Heroes
The ECSRT, a cornerstone in the local community, operates solely on the dedication of its volunteers, offering an invaluable inland search and rescue service. Their mission to assist lost, missing, or injured individuals spans across East Cornwall and, when called upon, reaches areas far beyond. This vital service, however, relies on the generosity and support of the public, as it is a charitable organisation powered by voluntary contributions.
Individuals can contribute to the cause in several ways, including shopping through easyfundraising.org.uk/eastcornwallsrt, where a portion of their online purchases can be directed as donations to the team. Alternatively, direct donations and the organisation of fundraising events via Givey.com/eastcornwallsrt are welcomed, ensuring the continuation and operational readiness of this essential service.
In emergencies, the public is reminded to dial 999 and request Mountain Rescue through Devon and Cornwall Police, ensuring swift and professional assistance is on hand when needed most. The ECSRT’s dedication to public safety and their unwavering commitment to aiding those in distress continue to be a beacon of hope and reassurance within the community.
