In an impressive display of multi-agency collaboration, members of the West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team joined forces with Devon & Cornwall Police and other emergency services for a comprehensive training exercise at Venford Reservoir, Dartmoor, last month.

The exercise aimed to enhance the skills of Lost Person Search Managers (LPSM) and further the capabilities of rescue teams across Devon and Cornwall.

A Day of Rigorous Training

The training day was structured around various challenging scenarios designed to simulate real-life search and rescue operations. Teams from Mountain Rescue England and Wales, spanning the regions of Devon and Cornwall, were tasked with completing these exercises alongside members of the Police force. This rigorous training session served not only as a learning experience but also as an opportunity for different agencies to work closely, sharing knowledge and tactics.

Collaboration

Highlighting the day’s success was the remarkable collaboration between multiple agencies. Apart from Mountain Rescue and Police teams, the event saw participation from the Fire and Rescue Service, Coastguard, and Devon & Cornwall 4×4 Response. Such extensive cooperation underscored the communal effort towards improving search and rescue operations within the region.

A notable mention was given to the Rapid Relief Team UK, who provided essential catering services throughout the day, ensuring that participants were well-nourished for the physically demanding tasks.

Achievements and Accolades

A significant milestone achieved during the day was by Shaun, a dedicated member of the West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team. Shaun not only participated in the training exercise but also succeeded in passing the course, earning him the qualification of Controller within the team. As a Controller, Shaun will now play a crucial role in coordinating team call-outs and working in tandem with Police LPSMs and other emergency service operatives.

Conclusion

The successful completion of the training exercise at Venford Reservoir stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the West Cornwall Search & Rescue Team and their emergency services colleagues. By fostering an environment of cooperation and shared learning, the day’s activities have undoubtedly contributed to enhancing the effectiveness of search and rescue operations across Devon and Cornwall. Congratulations to Shaun and all those involved in making the day a resounding success.
