Cornwall’s Libraries: 5-Star Community Satisfaction

Published On: 12 August 2024Last Updated: 12 August 2024By

Cornwall’s Library Service has been receiving glowing reviews from communities across the Duchy, according to a recent survey conducted by Cornwall Council. The survey, which involved over 3,600 respondents, revealed a remarkable 98% satisfaction rate, with users expressing their love for both the staff and the resources available.

Why Cornwall Loves Its Libraries

One of the standout features of Cornwall’s libraries is the range of digital resources on offer. Beyond the traditional book lending services, users have access to eBooks, e-audiobooks, e-newspapers, and magazines, with over a million digital downloads recorded last year. These resources have become essential to many, especially in an era where digital access is increasingly important.

Libraries in Cornwall are not just about books; they have become valued community hubs where people of all ages come together, fostering friendships and connections. This community aspect is particularly appreciated, with many users highlighting the welcoming and supportive environment provided by their local library.

One of the major changes that has been warmly received by users is the removal of overdue charges. Cornwall was one of the first English library authorities to scrap late fees in 2022, a move that has been credited with making library use more accessible and less stressful for everyone.

Praises for Library Staff

Library staff in Cornwall have been described as nothing short of amazing, with many users likening them to honorary family members. Their dedication to creating a friendly and supportive atmosphere has not gone unnoticed, and it has clearly contributed to the high levels of satisfaction reported in the survey.

Councillor Carol Mould, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, expressed her pride in the service, stating, “We know Cornwall’s libraries are amazing, and it’s lovely to hear how much they mean to the people that use them. The staff do an exceptional job and should feel really proud.”

Growing Membership and Community Impact

The popularity of Cornwall’s libraries is reflected in the growing number of memberships and book borrowings. In recent years, more people have been signing up for library cards, with membership growing at its fastest rate in the past decade.

The impact of libraries on the community is best highlighted by the testimonials of users. One mother, who participated in the survey, shared how the library had become a crucial part of her family’s life. She described it as a “warm and welcoming place to shelter when the weather is terrible” and a vital link to the community that has fostered a lifelong love of reading for her children. She credited the library with significantly improving her wellbeing and her ability to be a good mother.

The Role of Devolved Libraries

Cornwall has 27 libraries and a mobile library service, with 23 of these libraries having been devolved to town and parish councils, a community group, and a social enterprise. Cornwall Council has retained control of four libraries and the mobile service, providing books, IT services, and online resources across the Duchy through the Cornwall Library Service.

Library membership is free for anyone who lives, works, or studies in Cornwall. You can see what activities are available at you local library and become a member on the Cornwall Council website. Cornwall Council encourages anyone whose local library has made a difference in their life to share their story on the Let’s Talk Cornwall website.

The success of Cornwall’s libraries is a testament to the importance of community spaces that offer more than just books. As membership continues to grow and more people discover the benefits of these services, the libraries of Cornwall are set to remain an integral part of community life for years to come.
