Cornwall Libraries Launch 2025 Summer Reading Challenge for Children
Libraries across Cornwall gear up for a nature-themed summer of stories
Children across Cornwall are being invited to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, which kicks off on Saturday 5th July.
Run by Cornwall Library Service in partnership with The Reading Agency, the annual challenge is designed to keep children reading through the summer holidays. The 2025 theme, Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors, celebrates the magical connection between storytelling and the natural world.
For children aged 0 to 11
The challenge is open to all children aged 4 to 11, with a special mini challenge available for younger readers aged 0 to 4. To complete the challenge, children simply need to read six library books of their choice. These can be fiction, fact books, audiobooks or comics.
As they progress, children collect stickers and rewards. Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal and certificate.
One of the highest participation rates in the UK
Cornwall saw one of the best take-ups in the country last year, with more than 8,500 children (15%) getting involved. Almost half of the children who joined their local library specifically for the challenge have continued borrowing books since.
Sarah Preece, Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Localism and Planning at Cornwall Council, said:
“Every year the Summer Reading Challenge inspires thousands of children throughout Cornwall to head to their local library to explore books and comics. It’s a brilliant way to nurture a love of reading, and it’s fantastic to see that so many youngsters who signed up for the challenge last year are still visiting their local libraries.”
How to take part
Families can sign up in person at their local library or via the Cornwall Council website. All library services are free to use, with no late return fees, and thousands of e-books and audiobooks are available to download online.
Throughout the summer, Cornwall’s libraries will also host a range of free events and activities linked to the reading challenge.
