Cornwall Introduces Free Library Cards for Newborns: A Gateway to Lifelong Learning

Published On: 6 August 2024Last Updated: 6 August 2024By

Parents across Cornwall are now receiving a special gift when they register the birth of their child—a My First Library Card. This new programme aims to instill a lifelong love of reading by providing newborns with immediate access to Cornwall’s vast library resources.

The My First Library Card is being given to babies when their parents register their birth, offering families an early opportunity to explore the world of books together. Cornwall’s libraries are stocked with a variety of books tailored for a baby’s first year and beyond. This includes high contrast monochrome books that cater to the developing vision of newborns, textured and sensory books for active babies, and picture books and nursery rhymes designed to entertain and soothe.

Benefits for Babies and Parents Alike

Reading with children from an early age has numerous developmental benefits, including fostering brain development, sparking imagination, and supporting language skills. Cornwall Council’s initiative is designed not only to benefit babies but also to assist parents.

With a library card, parents can access books covering all aspects of childcare, as well as a variety of online resources such as e-audiobooks and e-magazines. Additionally, they are encouraged to participate in Rhyme Time sessions at their local library, which provide an excellent opportunity to meet other families and engage in enriching activities.

A Community of Happy Readers and Learners

Councillor Carol Mould, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods at Cornwall Council, highlighted the broader significance of the My First Library Card, describing it as “more than just a card; it’s a ticket to a world of knowledge and fun.” Mould emphasised the importance of storytime as a cherished activity that families can share over the years. Cornwall’s libraries, she noted, are welcoming spaces where families can come together to enjoy books and learning in a safe environment.

For families who have already registered their baby and wish to obtain a My First Library Card, these can be collected from any local library. Cornwall’s libraries are fine-free, with no overdue charges, making them even more accessible for all residents.

Families can join their local library by visiting the Cornwall Council website, ensuring that every child in Cornwall has the opportunity to embark on a journey of reading and learning from the very start of their life.
