Discover the Sub-Tropical Secrets of the Western Cape with Tremenheere’s Head Gardener
Alex Goodyear, Head Gardener at Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, is set to share his expert knowledge of sub-tropical flora during the Cornwall Garden Society’s (CGS) November lectures. These highly anticipated talks will offer a glimpse into Alex’s unique experience in the Western Cape, South Africa, where he explored some of the region’s most remarkable gardens and botanical treasures.
A Journey Rooted in Passion
Alex’s journey into the world of horticulture began with a four-year apprenticeship at Duchy College, Rosewarne. His passion for sub-tropical plants was cultivated further during his time at Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Isles of Scilly, where he participated in a prestigious scholarship programme. This experience led Alex to Babylonstoren, one of the oldest working farms in South Africa’s winelands region, where he undertook a three-month bursary internship.
Babylonstoren, often hailed as ‘the Versailles of vegetable gardens’ by The Times, is renowned for its botanical diversity, featuring everything from vibrant clivias to hardy cycads and a vast succulent house. This estate is also the inspiration behind The Newt in Somerset, which shares Babylonstoren’s imaginative approach to hospitality.
