Want to Serve Your Community? Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is Recruiting On-Call Firefighters!
Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) is seeking new recruits to join its on-call firefighter team, covering 26 stations across Cornwall. With firefighters from diverse backgrounds—including homemakers, shopkeepers, builders, farmers, office workers, and even company directors – Cornwall’s on-call crew responds to a wide range of emergencies. From rescues and floods to crashes and chemical spills, these responders are called upon to drop everything when the community needs them.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants need to be at least 18 years old, with no upper age limit. They should live or work within a five-minute radius of the station they intend to join. The pay varies based on availability and each station’s activity rate, and recruits also receive additional payment for training nights and courses.
A Vital Role in the Community
Kathryn Billing, Chief Fire Officer at CFRS, praised the dedication of on-call firefighters, noting, “Our on-call firefighters make up 75% of our crews across Cornwall and they play such an important role in keeping our communities safe and dealing with all types of incidents. I would encourage people who may not have considered a role in the service before to see what the job involves. We’re looking for people across Cornwall who are ready for a new challenge.”
Councillor Martyn Alvey, the portfolio holder responsible for CFRS at Cornwall Council, added his gratitude, saying, “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our on-call firefighters for their commitment and dedication. They do a fantastic job and are a vital part of the service.”
