Double Decker Disaster: Bus Engulfed in Flames on A30

Published On: 22 April 2024Last Updated: 22 April 2024By

In a harrowing incident this morning, a double decker bus burst into flames on the A30 near Bodmin, prompting quick action from local emergency services.

Firefighters from Bodmin and Liskeard Community Fire Stations were promptly at the scene to tackle the fierce blaze that had fully engulfed the bus.

Firefighting Efforts on the Scene

The fire, reported just after 09:00am, led to a significant emergency response involving two fire engines from Bodmin and a water carrier from Liskeard. Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) confirmed that the bus was “well alight” upon their arrival. To combat the blaze, crews deployed two hose reel jets and wore two sets of breathing apparatus, managing to swiftly extinguish the flames.

Firefighters also undertook thorough checks to ensure the fire had not spread beyond the initial site. “The crew continued to damp down and check the interior of the bus for fire spread by removing some of the seating,” stated CFRS. This meticulous examination helped in averting further damage or potential re-ignition.

Traffic Complications and Road Closures

The incident caused considerable disruption along the westbound A30. Devon and Cornwall Police were forced to close the road to manage the scene and a large fuel spillage that occurred during the fire. One lane was reopened by 10:20, and the road was fully accessible again by 12:15, easing the early traffic snarl-up.

No Casualties Reported

Fortuitously, the bus was not carrying any passengers at the time of the incident, and the bus driver escaped without injury. The absence of passengers and the quick escape of the driver helped prevent what could have been a severe loss in the face of such a large fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by vehicle fires, especially with larger vehicles like double decker buses. The swift response of the CFRS and coordination with police ensured that the fire was contained, and public safety was maintained.
