Forget Gritty McGritface: Cornwall Wants YOU to Name Their Salt Spreading Superheroes!
Cornwall Council is inviting residents to participate in a naming contest for its fleet of salt spreaders, the unsung heroes that play a crucial role in keeping the county’s roads safe during the winter season.
With nearly 750 runs completed this season, covering over 27,000 miles, Cornwall’s gritters have been instrumental in ensuring the safety and mobility of residents and visitors alike. Richard Williams-Pears, the Cornwall Council cabinet portfolio holder for transport, emphasised the significance of the fleet’s contribution and the intention behind the naming initiative. “We think it’s better when they have a good name behind them,” said Williams-Pears, urging the community to propose Cornish-themed names that reflect the county’s rich heritage, culture, and distinctiveness.
Cornwall boasts 25 gritters in its fleet, with an additional three in reserve, managed by Cornwall Highways. These vehicles are pivotal in treating the council’s 25 salting routes, covering approximately 1,420 km (883 miles) of Cornwall’s most critical A and B roads, which carry around 80% of daily traffic. The routes include essential access points to hospitals, emergency services, and schools, ensuring that life in Cornwall goes on uninterrupted, even in the harshest winter conditions.
Steve Bayley, Cornwall Highways Network Manager, highlighted the operation’s dual focus on safety and community engagement. “With the top priority being safety on our main roads, the teams have actively reviewed weather forecasts and analysed specialist data to determine the salt spreading actions,” Bayley noted, expressing excitement for the community’s involvement in the naming competition.
The council’s call for names is not just an invitation for public participation but a celebration of Cornwall’s unique identity, encouraging suggestions that draw inspiration from local heroes, landmarks, legends, and festivals. While the names of gritters elsewhere may lean towards the whimsical—such as Gritney Spears or Spreadie Mercury—Cornwall is looking for names that resonate more closely with its own stories and landscapes.
Residents have until 11:59 pm on Thursday, February 22, to submit their suggestions. You can find out more and submit your entry on the Cornwall Council website. Those without internet access are encouraged to participate by calling 0300 1234 100, ensuring that the opportunity to contribute is open to all.
This initiative not only serves to enhance the visibility and appreciation of the vital winter maintenance work but also strengthens the bond between the community and the services dedicated to their safety. As Cornwall awaits the creative and distinctive names that will adorn its gritter fleet, the council’s initiative stands as a testament to the power of community engagement in public services.
