Could You Be the Next Foster Hero? Cornwall’s New Hub Aims to Transform Lives
Cornwall has launched a pioneering approach to foster care recruitment, aiming to enhance the fostering experience throughout the South West.
The region’s latest hub, part of the Fostering South West project, offers a streamlined process for those interested in providing a nurturing environment for children in need.
A Single Point of Contact
For those in Cornwall considering the rewarding journey of fostering, the new hub serves as the first point of contact. It provides a team of specialists ready to assist with inquiries, offering essential support and guidance. This setup not only simplifies the initial steps for prospective carers but also connects them with their respective councils to access further information, training, and ongoing support.
An Ambitious Goal
The establishment of the hub marks a significant effort to bolster the number of foster carers in the region. By streamlining the inquiry and application processes, Cornwall Council hopes to build on the successful fostering groundwork laid by local authorities. This initiative is designed to encourage a greater number of applications and, ultimately, create more stable and loving homes for children and young people who cannot live with their biological families.
Government-Backed Support
This new strategy in foster carer recruitment is supported by government funding for an initial twelve months. This period will focus on enhancing the resources available to prospective foster carers, ensuring they receive the best possible start to their fostering journey.
Foster Care Fortnight
The announcement coincides with Foster Care Fortnight, running from May 13th to May 26th, during which Cornwall Council reiterates its call for more individuals and families to consider fostering. At present, there are always up to 40 children in Cornwall in urgent need of a home where they can feel safe and loved.
Comments from the Cabinet
Barbara, the Cabinet Member for Children and Families, expressed enthusiasm about the new hub, noting that it strengthens existing efforts and resources dedicated to foster care in Cornwall. She highlighted the benefits of collaborative work across the South West, aiming to expand the family of dedicated foster carers.
A Message from the Hub Team Manager
Carrie, the Fostering South West Hub Team Manager, shared her excitement about the potential impact of the hub. She emphasised the opportunity to improve the lives of children in care and the experiences of foster families across the region. The hub is set to enhance collaboration between local authorities, sharing resources and best practices to benefit the children and families involved.
The Importance of Fostering
Fostering provides children who cannot live with their own families a temporary or long-term home. These children often come from backgrounds of family issues, abuse, or neglect, and fostering offers them a chance to be part of a nurturing family environment. Whether it’s a temporary arrangement or a long-term commitment, fostering aims to provide the stability and support that children need to thrive.
How to Get Involved
