Cornwall Moves Closer to More Local Powers as Devolution Deal Progresses
Cornwall Council has welcomed the government’s announcement to move forward with the Level 2 Cornwall Devolution Deal, initially accepted by the Cabinet on 28th November 2023.
Funding Projects Already Underway
Much of the agreement is already in motion, including funding for projects aimed at supporting Cornish distinctiveness. However, the devolution of the adult education budget to the Council is still pending parliamentary approval.
In a statement released today (Thursday, 19th September), the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government described the agreements as an “important step” for regions like Cornwall to experience early benefits from devolution. The government also stated that it would “continue working to explore the next steps towards deeper and wider devolution.”
Push for Greater Autonomy
This announcement follows a joint letter sent less than a month ago by Cornwall Council leaders and Cornwall’s MPs to the Deputy Prime Minister. In the letter, they reiterated their desire for a “broader and deeper” devolution settlement, beyond what has already been secured, without the need for Cornwall to become part of a combined authority.
“We want you to know that Cornwall is ready, willing and able to participate in the Government’s ‘new wave of devolution’ in its own right, as opposed to any suggestion of a combined authority that stretches across the Tamar,” they stated.
What’s Next?
While the Council is eager to take on more local powers, the final step requires parliamentary approval for the adult education budget transfer. Until then, Cornwall Council and local leaders will continue to advocate for a devolution deal that reflects Cornwall’s unique needs and aspirations.
