Cornwall Council Seeks Public Input on £10.2 Million Adult Education Budget Strategy

Published On: 13 February 2024Last Updated: 13 February 2024By

Cornwall Council is inviting public feedback on its strategy to manage a significant £10.2 million Adult Education budget, set to be devolved from the Department for Education in 2025. This funding is part of the Council’s Devolution Deal with the government, aimed at enhancing local education to meet the needs of Cornwall’s residents and economy.

The budget will be utilised to commission Adult Education programs directly, focusing on equipping residents with the necessary knowledge and skills for employment, career advancement, entrepreneurship, or further education. The initiative is seen as a pivotal step in transforming lives and boosting the local economy, with a particular emphasis on sectors like renewable energy, which are emerging as key industries in the region.

Barbara Ellenbroek, the council’s portfolio holder for children, families, and adult education, emphasised the government’s recognition of the Council’s capability to tailor local skills provision to the area’s unique economic and business needs. “The devolution of the Adult Education budget is a testament to the trust in our ability to effectively direct learning and skills development in Cornwall,” Ellenbroek stated.

The Council has already initiated discussions with learning organisations, businesses, and other stakeholders about the future direction of Adult Education. With the public consultation now open, residents are encouraged to share their views on how the budget should be deployed to best serve the community’s educational needs. The feedback will play a crucial role in shaping the strategy to ensure that existing successful programs are supported while identifying and implementing necessary changes to address any gaps in the provision.

Residents have until February 25, 2024, to participate in the consultation, which is accessible through the Let’s Talk Cornwall website. This process represents a unique opportunity for the people of Cornwall to influence how adult education is delivered in their region, ensuring it aligns with local demands and contributes to the overall growth and prosperity of the community.
