Transformative Programme Empowering Cornwall Residents Celebrated on National Numeracy Day
In a major boost for the residents of Cornwall, the Multiply: Skills for Life programme continues to significantly enhance numeracy skills across the region.
Launched in 2023 by The Cornwall College Group (TCCG), this government-funded programme aims to improve the maths capabilities of adults aged 19 and over, supporting them in both professional and daily life.
Government Support and Community Impact
The Multiply Project, which has received a £2.5 million grant from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is being overseen by Cornwall Council. As the designated Lead Authority, Cornwall Council monitors the progress of various projects funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
National Numeracy Day Celebrations
In honour of National Numeracy Day on Wednesday 22nd May 2024, Cornwall College is highlighting the importance of “everyday maths” through its social media platforms, supporting the national campaign. This celebration underscores the programme’s commitment to fostering mathematical confidence within the community.
Community Engagement and Testimonials
Cornwall Neighbourhoods for Change (CN4C), a grassroots empowerment organisation, is one of the many communities benefiting from the Multiply programme. Vicky Golland from CN4C praised the collaboration with Cornwall College, saying, “Collaborating with Cornwall College has been instrumental in reaching, inspiring, and serving members of the community, equipping them with enhanced numeracy skills that can unlock various opportunities.”
Vicky further noted, “The College has worked fantastically well with CN4C on a one-to-one basis, they understood our operational approach, particularly in engaging with the most marginalised communities.”
Expanding Reach and Future Prospects
As the Multiply programme expands, its positive impact continues to grow, reaching more employers and support centres across the region. Tom Smith, project outreach officer at TCCG, emphasised the college’s commitment, stating, “At Cornwall College, we firmly believe in the transformative power of education. The Multiply programme exemplifies our commitment to supporting individuals not only to thrive professionally but also to feel more confident in everyday lives, such as assisting children with their homework.”
Official Support and Statements
Councillor Barbara Ellenbroek, portfolio holder for children and families at Cornwall Council, highlighted the importance of the programme, saying, “Helping our residents gain those extra maths skills is so important. By offering tailored courses where everyone can feel comfortable, we can boost confidence and help our residents improve their prospects of getting a better job, and give them the skills to support their children with their maths learning.”
Councillor Louis Gardner, portfolio holder for the economy at Cornwall Council, added, “Shared Prosperity Funding enables the Multiply programme to offer even more opportunities for residents to access the skills they need to meet recruitment needs now and in the future, and in turn help grow Cornwall’s economy.”
