Students Across Cornwall Dive into Green Skills: Cornwall College’s Pathway for Sustainable Futures

Published On: 30 October 2024Last Updated: 30 October 2024By

Cornwall College is sparking a wave of environmental action among young people through its Pre-16 Green Skills Construction Pathway, empowering GCSE students across Cornwall to help shape a sustainable future. This hands-on programme allows students to engage with cutting-edge green technologies, renewable energy, and eco-friendly construction techniques.

Workshops, Assemblies, and After-School Clubs

Partnering with local schools, Cornwall College has rolled out a series of workshops, assemblies, and after-school clubs, offering students a practical introduction to sustainable practices. This early exposure to green skills is designed to inspire a new generation of environmental advocates in Cornwall. The programme has already generated a range of student-led projects, highlighting the efforts young people are making toward a greener future.

“We’re excited to see schools and students engage in projects and take part in our green skills workshops,” said David Atkinson-Beaumont, Head of Cornwall College St Austell. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase the college’s sustainable practices and build a community of young environmental advocates in Cornwall.”

Partnerships in Sustainability

Beyond working with schools, Cornwall College has teamed up with local businesses in the renewable energy sector and environmental organisations, including RJ Working and Surfers Against Sewage. These partnerships are providing students with valuable connections in the field of sustainability, helping them explore potential careers in green industries.

Jess Burton, Pre-16 and Careers Manager at The Cornwall College Group, who oversees the programme, emphasised the impact of the pathway: “It’s been amazing to see how engaged and inspired the students are. They’re eager to learn about green technologies and sustainability, and it’s clear they want to make a real difference in their communities.”

Funding for a Green Future

This pathway is supported by funding from the UK Government’s Good Growth Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Shared Prosperity Fund, aimed at enhancing local skills and economic growth through sustainable projects.
