Groundbreaking Opportunity for Aspiring Tradespeople at Cornwall College
New Apprenticeship Prepares Students for Construction Industry Careers
Cornwall College Camborne has announced the launch of its new Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship programme, providing a hands-on training opportunity for those looking to build a career in construction.
First Cohort Welcomed in Partnership with Industry Leaders
Starting in January, the apprenticeship programme welcomed its first group of students, marking the beginning of a collaboration with leading industry names including WBM Groundworks, Champion Groundworks, Cornwall Groundworks and Landscaping, KHC Groundworks, and Morcom Construction.
Richard Billington, curriculum area manager for construction and building services, explained the vision behind the new offering: “Following the successful launch of our Roofing, Craft Bricklayer and Low Carbon Heating apprenticeships earlier in the year, we are now looking for apprentices to study on our new Groundworks apprenticeship.”
Richard emphasised that the programme has been designed to tackle the construction industry’s growing skills gap: “This course is designed to address the growing skills gap in the construction industry and provide a comprehensive training programme that not only meets the current demands of the sector but also anticipates future needs.”
Comprehensive Training for a Career in Construction
The apprenticeship equips learners with technical skills in groundworks, such as installing drainage systems, concreting, constructing roads and pathways, and hard landscaping. In addition to practical expertise, the programme focuses on teamwork, communication, and problem-solving – skills vital for success in the construction sector.
Students will also have the chance to work closely with on-site trades, including bricklayers and plant operatives, offering a well-rounded experience that prepares them for various career pathways.
Lisa Piper, head of business development at The Cornwall College Group, highlighted the value of the programme’s industry partnerships: “By collaborating with industry leaders like KHC Groundworks and Champion Groundworks, we ensure that our apprentices benefit from real-world experience and excellent mentorship from some of the best in the business.”
Open to All Backgrounds
The Groundworker Apprenticeship is open to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including school leavers, career changers, and those already working in construction who want to expand their skill set and gain a recognised qualification.
