Falmouth Marine School, a distinguished member of The Cornwall College Group, is launching an innovative programme designed to train the next generation of professional superyacht engineers.

In collaboration with the University of Plymouth and supported by the maritime charity Turn to Starboard, the school is introducing a unique three-year course starting this September.

Pioneering Education in Maritime Engineering

Steve Taylor, the head of campus, announced the launch of the turHNC/FdSc Professional Superyacht Engineer programme, which is set to revolutionise maritime engineering education. By combining academic rigour with practical training, the programme aims to mould proficient engineers equipped to tackle the challenges of modern maritime careers.

“The Professional Superyacht Engineer programme at Falmouth Marine School is meticulously crafted to prepare aspiring maritime professionals to excel in the highly prestigious field of superyacht engineering,” said Steve. He emphasised that the curriculum is designed not only to impart essential engineering knowledge but also to instil the confidence needed to thrive in the maritime sector.

Hands-on Training and Academic Excellence

The course offers a blend of academic studies and practical exposure, allowing students to earn both a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and a Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Professional Superyacht Engineering. Participants will gain hands-on experience aboard commercial vessels, ensuring that they not only learn in the classroom but also apply their knowledge in real-world settings.

This comprehensive educational approach is supported by a close partnership with leading commercial yachting organisations in the South West, aligning the programme with industry standards and expectations. This strategic collaboration guarantees that students receive a well-rounded education, preparing them for both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the maritime industry.

Enhancing Skills for the Future

The development of this programme was influenced by direct feedback from the maritime industry and represents a strategic response to the evolving demands of the superyacht and small vessel sectors. It focuses on traditional marine engineering expertise while incorporating essential skills for technological and sustainable advancements.

Backed by the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF) and the Skills Injection Fund, the programme addresses critical skills gaps identified within the Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP), demonstrating a commitment to enhancing the technical capabilities of the future workforce.

Join the First Cohort

Applications for the Professional Superyacht Engineer programme are now open, with the selection process involving a formal interview. Prospective students can learn more about the programme and career opportunities in the field during two open days scheduled for 15th June and 20th July.
