Why Aren’t There More Routes?
In a candid update, the airport also addressed one of the most common questions from travellers: why aren’t there more destinations?
According to the post, there are several behind-the-scenes factors that influence whether a new route can be added:
- Planning ahead: Airlines start scheduling flights around 15 months in advance.
- Passenger demand: The airport surveys traveller needs to help shape discussions with airlines.
- Fleet availability: Airlines must have enough aircraft and crew to operate new routes.
- Slot availability: Both the departure and arrival airports need to have slots available.
- Profitability: A route needs to be sustainable—if it doesn’t make money, it won’t stick.
- Competition: When passengers choose airports like Exeter or Bristol for cheaper fares, airlines take this into account.
